CURRENT STATUS

Just prior to the 2020 legislative session, Governor Laura Kelly and Majority Leader Jim Denning (R-Overland Park) held a press conference announcing a so-called Medicaid Expansion compromise. The compromise in bill form, SB 252, is more capitulation that compromise, which is why the governor and her allies are championing the bill.

Currently, the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee is holding hearings on the item, and then may eventually work the bill. It is subject to possible amendments in committee - and if passed out, on the floor of the Senate.  Currently, due to the failure of the Value Them Both Amendment to pass the legislature, many have called for Medicaid Expansion to be on hold due to the fact it would lead to taxpayer-funded abortions if the Value Them Both Amendment is not adopted.

Center-right legislators have successfully stopped the expansion of ObamaCare in Kansas for 7 years. As the public learns more and more about the impact of expansion, the more and more they are opposed. Rather than caving to the demands of those who want to expand the welfare state, it is important that we stand strong, particularly as the consequences of expansion in other states become so clear.

WHY THE HODES DECISION WILL LEAD TO TAXPAYER-FUNDED ABORTION WITHOUT THE VALUE THEM BOTH AMENDMENT

During the week of February 10th, the Senate Public Health & Welfare Committee heard compelling testimony from several indicating that the Hodes Decision will lead to taxpayer-funded abortions unless the Value Them Both Amendment is adopted.  That testimony is linked below:

WHY MEDICAID / OBAMACARE EXPANSION IS WRONG FOR KANSAS

1. Medicaid Expansion harms the elderly and disabled.

  • Puts children, the elderly, and the disabled at the back of the line behind able-bodied adults.

  • MOre than 4,000 with physical or developmental disabilities currently sit on waiting lists in Kansas.

  • Funds spent on welfare for able-bodied adults cannot be spent on the truly needy.

2. Medicaid Expansion will not save failing hospitals.

  • The expansion of Obamacare will increase taxes on hospitals.

  • Other states have already experienced hospital closures post-expansion.

  • Adding able-bodied adults tot he already underfunded system will exacerbate shortages.

3. Medicaid Expansion is a "get out of work free" card.

  • The Denning/Kelly plan is an expansion of ObamaCare in Kansas.

  • It provides a welfare benefit to able-bodied adults who choose not to work.

  • The plan does not ever require able-bodied adults to work.

4. Medicaid Expansion kicks Kansans off private insurance.

  • Forces nearly 30,000 Kansans off private insurance and onto a government-run health plan.

  • 54% of individuals eligible for expansion already have private insurance.
