Statement on Anti-2nd Amendment SB 235

SB 235, a controversial bill that would water down Kansans Second Amendment right to carry a lawful concealed firearm was hastily placed on the Senate Calendar on Wednesday, March 22nd with notice of a public hearing scheduled for only 24 hours later.

This rushed timeline comes after similar anti-gun legislation has already worked through the process, but was appropriately killed in the Sen. Federal and State Affairs committee for lack of support.

The Senate President is allowing this committee hearing by breaking her own transparency rule just instituted on March 17th, less than one week ago.

“Pushing this anti-gun legislation through without proper public notice is a blatant attempt to take away the rights of lawful Kansans who wish only to protect themselves and their families,” said Sen. Ty Masterson. “The individuals pushing this bill are trying to convince us that a sign on the door that reads, “Gun Free Zone” will keep your family safe. Common sense and crime statistics tell us differently. A sign does not protect your family from criminals, intent on carrying out an evil act in a “gun-free zone.” Guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens, however, can and will keep you safe as demonstrated in the reduction in murder rates simultaneously as the number of lawful concealed carry holders has skyrocketed across the nation."

As reported by Kellan Howell in The Washington Times, while the number of concealed carry permits have soared from 4.6 million to over 12.8 million from 2007-2015, murder rates have simultaneously fallen from 5.6 killings per 100,000 people to just 4.2, about a 25 percent drop.
